Ngày 10 tháng 2 vừa qua, nhân kỷ niệm năm Quốc tế về Hóa học, Thomson Reuters đã công bố danh sách 100 nhà hóa học hàng đầu thế giới trong vòng 10 năm từ năm 2000-2010. Bảng xếp hạng dựa trên chỉ số tác động (Impact) thông qua số lần trích dẫn (Citations) trên các công trình được công bố (gồm articles và reviews) tính từ tháng Giêng năm 2000.
Các nhà hóa học có mặt trong danh sách đến từ các quốc gia có nền khoa học và công nghệ tiên tiến như: Hoa Kỳ (70), Đức (7), Vương Quốc Anh (4), Canada, Pháp, Đan Mạch, Thụy Sĩ và Hàn Quốc mỗi nước có 2 nhà hóa học, Australia, Bỉ, Thụy Điển, Italy, Israel, Nam Phi, Brazil, Nhật và Singapore mỗi nước có 1 nhà hóa học có mặt trong danh sách này.
Các Viện và Trường học nơi các nhà hóa học đang làm việc gồm: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (6), The Scripps Research Institute (5), University of California Berkeley (5), Harvard University (4), Rice University (4), Northwestern University (4), California Institute of Technology (3), University of California Riverside (3), and University of Chicago (3).
Nhìn vào con số thống kê chúng ta thấy Hoa Kỳ vẫn là nước có số lượng các nhà hóa học nhiều nhất trong danh sách và số các nhà hóa học hiện công tác ở Viện Công nghệ Massachusetts là đông đảo nhất.
